More and more people are becoming significantly deficient in B Vitamins. B-Vits are essential for so many different functions, such as:
- Normal growth and development, crucial in children
- B12 helps and protects your nerves
- It also manufactures your DNA
- Metabolises fats and carbs
- Vital for the production of red blood cells
What this means in laymans terms is that B12 is essential for just about everything in the body and a deficiency can cause symptoms of fatigue, headaches, joint pain, brain fog, insomnia, digestive problems, anaemia as well as dry, brittle hair and weak nails.
It used to be that only Vegans should concern themselves with Vitamin B12 deficiency however, out of the 200+ client we’ve seen at Glorious Foods, B12 deficiency seems to be becoming more and more common. Often a change of diet and knowing what foods contain B12 can help to ease the situation, however sometimes a B12 injection is necessary to help to boost these levels. This can only be done via your GP and testing can be a long and drawn out process.
Vitamin B12 is mainly found in animal proteins (as pictured) which is why Vegans really struggle to take in enough of this particular Vitamin however, there are some really great supplements available. We always recommend Natures Sunshine products as we have tried and tested them over the years and found them to be very effective and they don’t contain many of the nasties that some supplements do.
All B Vitamins are really essential for good health and B12 along with the other B-Vits such as Biotin, Folate, Niacin, B1, B2, B5 and B6 all help to build a strong and healthy brain, easing depression, anxiety and stress related feelings as they clear the pathway for the neurotransmitters to the brain, ensuring that the brain is fighting fit and ready to tackle anything. Combined with the energy boosting B12 this will help to combat even the blackest mood. If you’re feeling low a short term supplement may benefit but nothing comes close to a healthy, balanced diet full of a wide variety of tasty and nutritious foods.
Keep a close eye on your vitamin and mineral levels by ensuring that you are either regularly tested or are completely confident you’re consuming a well balanced diet containing enough essential nutrients to rule this out.
